Odelca-DR installed at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, Zambia

Veenendaal, February 17th, 2010 – Delft Imaging Systems BV, supplier of innovative diagnostic X-Ray products is pleased to announce the installation of the Odelca-DR at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) in Lusaka.

lusaka.pngThe installation has been successfully accomplished at the UTH by our Zambian organization. Besides the Odelca-DR award winning Picture Archive and Communications System from sister company Rogan Delft and two diagnostic viewing stations were also installed at the X-ray department. “The system provides excellent images and the PCAS will be a tremendous first step in making our department filmless” says Dr. Veronica Sunkutu-Sichizya, chief Radiologist at UTH. In the near future other wards and clinics will be connected to the UTH PACS via the internet. Special software developed by Rogan-Delft even allows low bandwidth connections, like GSM, to be used to access these images.

The hospital and Delft Imaging Systems have agreed that the images will also be made available for the CAD4TB project.

The CAD4TB project is an international collaborative project with partners in Africa and Europe. The aim of this project is to develop an expert system which will help (non) formal trained medical personnel in the diagnosis of tuberculosis.
“This will have a major impact on the patient throughput and efficiency in the hospital and at the same time will accelerate the optimalisation of our CAD4TB system “says Guido Geerts President and CEO of Delft Diagnostic Imaging.
The project runs very prosperous so far. Geerts aims to have a complete working system of the computer aided diagnosis available in the course of this year.

Delft Imaging Systems install Odelca-DR camera system at the University of Cape Town Lung Institute in South Africa

Veenendaal, November 16th, 2009 – Delft Imaging Systems B.V., supplier of innovative diagnostic X-ray products recently installed an Odelca-DR digital X-ray camera system at the University of Cape Town Lung Institute (UCTLI) in South Africa.

The Odelca-DR, digital X-ray camera system, is an innovative chest X-ray solution accelerating tuberculosis case detection. Fast computer-aided diagnosis will significantly contribute to the battle against TB by recognizing specific tuberculosis patterns in the lungs.

Commenting on this project Dr Rodney Dawson, head of the Centre for Tuberculosis Research Innovation  of the Lung Institute says: “Newer digital technology will play an important role in screening of patients for tuberculosis. Automated systems such as Odelca-DR allow for rapid population screening and the ease of use of such systems with off-site reporting and future digital reconstruction reporting represents a major move forward from conventional analogue radiology in high incidence settings.”
Joop van Beek, International Sales Manager of Delft Imaging Systems states: “For many years our company has been active on the national and international level as a supplier of X-ray systems for the fight against tuberculosis. In 1950, Oldelft supplied the first analogue thorax systems, the Odelca. After innovations such as the Electrodelca and Digidelca we are delighted that the University of Cape Town Lung Institute have chosen for our new, digital thorax system - the Odelca-DR.”

This project is part of the “Computer Aided Diagnosis for TB” (CAD4TB) program, partially financed by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs. The Image Sciences Institute of the University of Utrecht and Delft Diagnostic Imaging collaborate with the University of Cape Town, the Desmond Tutu Lung Institute of the University of Stellenbosch (both of RSA) and Zambart (Zambia) to develop this breakthrough capability.
Delft Imaging Systems work in conjunction with its regional partner QuantX International for installation, service and support of this project.
Tuberculosis is one of the most important global health problems. The vast majority of TB cases are in developing countries and South Africa has an exceedingly high TB case rate. Chest X-rays play a significant role in accelerating diagnosis and should be performed early in the course of the examination of a tuberculosis suspect. The limitations on the wider use of chest X-rays, such as non-availability at peripheral health facilities and the difficulty of interpreting results, even by trained physicians, remain a major obstacle.

About the University of Cape Town Lung Institute
The Lung Institute, a wholly owned subsidiary of the University of Cape Town, is nearing the end of its ninth year of operation and grows both in terms of projects and budget (of more than 20% year on year). The six Clinical Research Units respond to the need and opportunities for addressing health issues in Southern Africa.

One of these units, the Centre for Tuberculosis Research Innovation (CTBRI) comprises a section devoted to novel treatments and trials of new candidate drugs for tuberculosis (headed by Dr Rodney Dawson) based in the Institute and the Lung Infection and Immunity Unit under the direction Associate Professor Keertan Dheda which forms part of the same Unit based in the Department of Medicine, in the Faculty of Health Sciences. The CTBRI was formed in 2007 and has over a short period developed a reputation for trials with both high quality and recruitment.

Delft Imaging Systems delivers two body scanners for drug tracing to the Romanian Border Police

Delft Imaging Systems is proud to announce that it has delivered two body scanners to the Romanian Border Police. The systems will be used for drug tracing in the human body.

Similar equipment from Delft Imaging Systems meant for the fight against drug smuggling, had previously been chosen by the Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, the Netherlands’ main airport and ranking fifth in Europe. More governments and airport authorities have in the meantime shown a great interest in this useful and significant tool in the war against drugs.

The Romanian Border Police purchased two body scanners with the purpose of controlling drug trafficking from and into Romania. The systems, which distinguish themselves by very low X-ray dose, will be installed at the two Bucharest airports and are expected to be operational in September 2008.

For many years our company has been active on the national and international level as a supplier of X-ray systems for the fight against tuberculosis. In 1950, Oldelft supplied the first analogue thorax systems, the Odelca. After innovations such as the Electrodelca and Digidelca we are delighted that the GGD Rotterdam-Rijnmond have again chosen for our new, digital thorax system - the Odelca DR.

This system has been developed especially for the fight against tuberculosis, to be installed in a  mobile X-ray unit. The TB suppression is still indispensable in the Netherlands. The GGD Rotterdam have already for many years been striving to drive this illness further back. We at Delft Imaging Systems are happy to contribute to these efforts. We trust that the GGD Rotterdam-Rijnmond will, with the use of this new system, substantially contribute to the suppression of tuberculosis.
